Auto repair, tire and smog shops
Auto repair direct mail that follows the service schedule
An auto repair shop's best mailing list is already in its shop-management system: customers, vehicles, last visits and the work they declined. Plavidian turns that export into service-due cards and declined-work letters, and reaches new drivers with Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) flats and new-resident lists around the shop.
Service-due and declined-work reminders from your shop export
Win-back cards to customers gone six months or more
EDDM flats on the routes around the shop, renters included
New-resident postcards from a new-mover list ordered each month
Plavidian Insight™ USPS scan tracking included with every mailing
How mail fits
How mail fits the way drivers pick and keep a shop
Mail does the most for an auto repair shop at five moments: a driver moves to the area, a car leaves factory warranty, a service comes due, an inspection finds work the customer postpones, and a regular stops coming in. The last three run on the shop's own records.
Acquisition mail has to arrive before the breakdown, so the shop is one the driver already knows when a warning light comes on. Give a low-risk reason to visit: an inspection or a clearly described service at a printed price.
Reminders should follow the owner's-manual interval, not a blanket 3,000 miles: California's CalRecycle 'Check Your Number' campaign calls that standard out of date for most cars. Keep score in car count and repeat visits over months; a customer back for maintenance is in the bay when the next larger repair turns up.
Campaigns that work
Auto repair campaigns, from the service desk to the street
Most start in the shop's own export; the rest add routes or lists around the shop.
Service-due reminders
A shop-management export can show which vehicles are due by date or estimated mileage. A card naming the car and the service reads as a note from the customer's own shop, not an ad.
Who
Active customers whose vehicles come due next month
Where
Customer file
When
Monthly, in homes a few weeks before the service comes due
Piece
6x11 or 6x9 postcard naming the vehicle and service, with the registered shop name, address and a booking QR code
Brakes, tires or a coolant service the customer postponed are the shop's clearest next job, and the customer already has the estimate. A letter naming the item reads as follow-up, not a pitch.
Who
Customers who postponed a recommended repair at a recent visit
Where
Customer file
When
One to three months after the visit, in monthly batches
Piece
Personalized letter or variable-data card quoting the estimate as written; letter-size pieces can add Plavidian Sentry™ camera verification as an option
A customer gone six months or more still knows the shop. One offer with its exact price and inclusions gives them a reason to return before another shop becomes the habit.
Who
Customers with no visit in six to twelve months; set the cutoff from your own visit pattern
Where
Customer file, updated through NCOALink for customers who filed a change of address
When
Quarterly, well apart from the last drop to the same names
Piece
6x11 postcard with one offer, its inclusions and an expiration date
New-resident welcome
A household new to the area may not have a mechanic yet, or a habit to break. A card from a new-mover list, ordered fresh each month, introduces the shop before the first warning light does.
Who
Recent movers, renters included, from a new-mover list Plavidian supplies through licensed data providers
Where
The drive area around the shop, including commute roads
When
Monthly; near a military base, mail more in the peak moving season, May 15 to September 30 per Military OneSource
Piece
6x11 postcard with a first-visit inspection offer, hours and a small map
About 85 percent of San Diego's rain falls November through March (National Weather Service), so the first storms after a dry summer find worn wipers, tires and brakes. A check that lands before the rain is a timely reason to visit; colder regions can use the first freeze.
Who
Every home on the routes nearest the shop, plus current customers
Where
EDDM routes within a few miles; addressed cards farther out
When
In homes late September through November
Piece
6.5x9 or 8.5x11 EDDM flat and a 6x11 customer card, with exact prices rather than 'as low as'
In California, gasoline and hybrid cars eight model years old and newer skip the smog check at registration renewal, so the first comes due at model year plus eight and then every other year; those four model years old and newer also skip it at a change of ownership, and diesels 1998 and newer get neither exemption (Bureau of Automotive Repair). A station can remind its own customers from the model years on file.
Who
Your customers whose cars reach their first or next biennial check
Where
Customer file only; DMV records need each owner's consent for marketing use
When
Monthly, a month before each customer's renewal month
Piece
Postcard stating the inspection price and the state certificate fee separately
Audience and area
Drawing the area around an auto repair shop
Start where customers already come from: count repair orders by ZIP code in the shop export. The few ZIPs supplying most of the car count are the core, and they may follow commute roads rather than circle the shop.
Keep the renters: their cars need brakes, tires and oil changes too. The Mailing List Builder counts households by radius, ZIP, city, county or a drawn shape from 2020 Census blocks and ACS 5-year data bundled into Plavidian's system. Income and age filters can shape the area for a premium specialist; combined filters are estimates, and the list is built after you order.
For saturation around the bays, the EDDM Route Builder shows each carrier route's residential and business counts from the USPS EDDM route service, refreshed at least every two weeks, with reach presets up to 8 miles.
No Plavidian tool selects by vehicle make, model, model year or EV ownership, and the Driver's Privacy Protection Act lets a state release motor vehicle records in bulk for marketing only with each person's express consent. The shop's service history is the vehicle data that counts.
Use EDDM to reach every household on the routes nearest the shop, renters included, with no list to buy. Use addressed mail for anything built from your records, for new residents, and to leave current customers out of an offer.
EDDM Fits when
A new shop, new ownership or a new address the neighborhood should hear about
A standing coupon or seasonal-check program on the routes closest to the bays
An oil-change, tire or brake coupon meant for every driver nearby
List An addressed list fits when
Service-due, declined-work, win-back and smog reminders from the export
European, diesel, EV or fleet specialists mailing their own customer file, since their buyers are a small share of any route
A first-visit offer that should skip current customers
A 6x11 or 6x9 card, which is letter-size and cannot go EDDM
Plavidian mails EDDM on its own permit through the business mail entry unit, so the USPS Retail cap of 5,000 pieces per ZIP Code per day does not apply. Jobs start at 200 flat-size pieces (6.5x9, 8.5x11 or 9x12), and EDDM cannot select households by homeowner status, income, age or name.
For a first-visit offer across two to five miles, price both before choosing.
The everyday reminder and coupon card, within USPS letter-size limits of 6-1/8 by 11-1/2 inches; variable data prints each customer's vehicle and service.
Hung by the shop's own staff for a grand opening: Plavidian prints them but does not mail or hang them. Pickup in Vista, local delivery around North County, or shipping.
How it runs at Plavidian
How an auto repair mailing runs at Plavidian
Reminder mail starts with the shop-management export; neighborhood mail starts with the routes around the bays.
Mailing Blueprint™
See where customers live
With a free Plavidian account, Mailing Blueprint™ reads your export and returns the presort, postage from USPS Notice 123 prices (+/- 5% planning range), in-home dates and a customer map. Final postage is confirmed at USPS acceptance.
List processing
Clean the export
Plavidian CASS-processes the addresses and runs NCOALink when the mailing needs it. Keep every record to mail one card per vehicle, or remove duplicates and household the file for one card per household.
EDDM Route Builder
Pick neighborhood routes
Choose routes around the shop, residential only if you like, with postage at origin, SCF and DDU entry side by side.
Mail Date Planner
Set the in-home week
Work back from the in-home week to order and proof dates. Order cutoffs are 12:00 PM Pacific, or 9:00 AM for a 2-day rush on certain products, and production starts after proof approval.
Plavidian Studio™
Design or check the card
Plavidian Studio™ draws the bleed, safe zone and address area on a 6x11 card and saves it to your order; the free Print File Check grades outside art A to F.
Production in Vista
Print and address
Reminder cards and declined-work letters run through Plavidian's plant in Vista, California: data processing, printing, addressing, inserting and USPS preparation. Every job, including approved-vendor work, is held to the published Plavidian Standard™.
USPS preparation
Enter the mail
Plavidian is a USPS Full-Service Certified Mail Service Provider and mails on its own permits, so the shop needs none.
Plavidian Sentry™, optional
Optional camera verification
Added to a letter-size job, such as 6x11 cards or #10 window letters, Plavidian Sentry reads each piece as it is addressed and diverts mismatches for reprint.
Plavidian Insight™
Follow the drop
Included with every mailing: USPS scans of each month's reminders by day and on a map, showing mailstream visibility, not proof of delivery.
What it costs
How much does auto repair direct mail cost?
An auto repair mailing costs printing, mailing services and USPS postage, plus a list when you mail beyond your customer file. For a real number, price your own piece: the Direct Mail Cost Calculator estimates an addressed postcard run, and the EDDM Route Builder prices a chosen flat on the routes around the shop.
Quantity
Printing costs less per piece on longer runs, so a month of a few hundred service reminders costs more per card than a neighborhood drop of several thousand.
Size and stock
A 6x9 usually prints for less than a 6x11. A 16pt card costs more to print than 14pt, but at 6x9 or 6x11 both mail at the same letter-size postage. Declined-work letters add envelopes and inserting.
The list
The shop's own export has no rental cost and EDDM needs no list; new-mover, consumer and business lists for fleet offers add a charge.
Postage class and entry
Reminder and coupon mail usually goes USPS Marketing Mail, priced below First-Class Mail in USPS Notice 123 and slower to deliver. A Marketing Mail mailing needs at least 200 pieces (or 50 pounds), so a shop with fewer reminders due in a month can combine two months into one batch. Drop-shipping to the SCF, or to the DDU for EDDM flats, lowers postage further.
Frequency
Monthly service reminders mean up to twelve batches a year, and win-back, first-rain and smog mail add drops, so budget the year.
Printing can be paid by card. USPS postage is paid by check or wire, and mail is released once postage has cleared.
Measuring results
Measuring auto repair mail
Count cars, not replies. Print a campaign code on every piece and have service writers enter it on the repair order, so the shop-management system shows which visits each mailing brought in.
Give each QR code its own landing page and compare new repair orders against the mailed list. For reminders, hold back a random slice of each month's list: the gap in return visits between mailed and unmailed customers is the cleanest read.
A separate phone number per campaign can count calls, but check your state's rules first. In California, BAR requires the phone number on file in online ads, and the Automotive Service Councils of California notes that a different tracking number there may be considered misleading, so print the registered number on the card and its landing page and track by code and QR instead.
Plavidian Insight, included with every Plavidian mailing at no separate charge, shows USPS scan counts by day and on a map; line the scan dates up with the dates coded repair orders come in. Scans show mailstream visibility, not proof of delivery. On addressed mail, Plavidian Impression™ can add a USPS Informed Delivery® campaign with a booking link; Impression is not affiliated with or endorsed by USPS.
Rules to know
Advertising rules that shape auto repair mail
California's Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) regulates what a repair dealer's ads say, and a few federal rules reach any shop's mail.
Registered name and address (California)
Ads may not be false or misleading and must clearly show the name and address on the dealer's state registration certificate. 16 CCR 3371
Price specials (California)
A price is misleading if the shop does not intend to sell at it but aims to draw the customer into a costlier job, or if the ad could mislead about which parts, labor or services it includes. If extra parts or labor are often needed, say so near the price or in an asterisked footnote, in type at least half the price's size, and say the extra cost may be substantial when you expect it to top 25 percent of the advertised price. 16 CCR 3372.1
QR codes and landing pages (California)
Since October 1, 2025, online auto repair ads must show the business name and phone number registered with BAR and the Automotive Repair Dealer (ARD) number, so the page a QR code opens should carry all three. BAR: online advertising
Smog check prices (California)
Stations must post inspection prices with the state certificate fee listed separately; a smog coupon should separate the two amounts as well. 16 CCR 3340.15
DMV records and marketing (federal)
The Driver's Privacy Protection Act allows a state to release motor vehicle records in bulk for marketing only with each person's express consent, so build smog-due mail from your own records, not DMV data. 18 U.S.C. 2721
Warranty claims (federal)
Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a company cannot void a warranty or deny coverage solely because the owner had service or parts from someone else, though it may deny coverage for damage that outside work or parts caused. 'Routine maintenance here does not void your warranty' fits; a promise that nothing done here can affect coverage does not. FTC: warranties and Mag-Moss
Financing offers (federal)
If a mailer advertising installment financing states a payment amount, number of payments, down payment or finance charge, Regulation Z requires the down payment, repayment terms and annual percentage rate in the same ad. Regulation Z, 12 CFR 1026.24
General information for planning a mailing, not legal advice. Confirm the rules that apply to you with your regulator or counsel.
Near Vista
Auto Repair mail in San Diego County
Local routes, ZIP codes, entry and timing for practices and shops in the county where Plavidian prints and mails.
It can, when each piece has a specific reason to arrive: a service coming due, work the customer postponed, or a new resident choosing a shop. No published response rate applies to your shop, so judge mail by the repair orders your own system ties to each campaign.
Should an auto repair shop use EDDM?
Yes, for an offer meant for every household on the routes around the shop, renters included, since car care does not depend on owning a home. A Plavidian EDDM job is at least 200 flat-size pieces (6.5x9, 8.5x11 or 9x12) and cannot skip current customers or select households by any trait.
One offer with its exact price and inclusions, the shop name and address as registered (with BAR, in California), phone, hours, a small map and a QR code to booking. If the service often needs extra parts or labor, say so near the price.
Send reminders monthly, since vehicles come due every month, and win-back offers about quarterly. Run neighborhood EDDM on a schedule the shop can afford to repeat, with drop dates set by its own slow weeks.
An auto repair mailing costs printing, mailing services and USPS postage, plus a list when you mail past your own customers; quantity, card size, stock and postage entry set the total. The Direct Mail Cost Calculator estimates a postcard or EDDM run on screen; lists and letter inserting are quoted.
Print a campaign code on every piece and record it on the repair order, point each QR code to its own page, and compare new repair orders with the mailed list. Plavidian Insight, included with every mailing, shows when USPS scanned the pieces.
Can Plavidian mail service reminders from my shop system every month?
Yes, as a monthly order: send the customers coming due as a CSV or Excel export, and Plavidian processes the list, prints, mails and tracks the batch. Each batch is its own order; Plavidian does not run automatic or triggered mail.
Can I mail drivers whose cars are due for a smog check?
Your own customers, yes: the model years and past smog dates in your records show when each car comes due. Beyond them, the Driver's Privacy Protection Act lets a state release DMV records in bulk for marketing only with each owner's express consent, and no Plavidian tool selects by vehicle or smog date.
Send the customer export for reminder and win-back mail, or the carrier routes you mapped for a neighborhood drop, and Plavidian will quote the printing, mailing and postage together.
