Renters are 45% of the audience
An owner filter would cut 45% of San Diego County's households from an auto shop's list, and in much of the City of San Diego it would cut most of them: 25% of households own their home downtown (92101), 29% in North Park (92104) and 31% in Pacific Beach (92109).
North County has renter-heavy ZIP codes too, among them Oceanside's 92058 (28% owner) and 92054 (39%), Escondido's 92025 (42%) and Vista's 92083 (47%). Leave the owner filter off in the Mailing List Builder; in these ZIP codes EDDM loses nothing by being unable to select owners.
Coast and backcountry: income, ownership and distance
Incomes differ sharply between coastal North County and the inland valleys. Half of households in Encinitas (92024) earn $150,000 or more, and 64% in Del Mar (92014); in El Cajon (92021) the share is 20%, and in Vista (92083) 19%. A European or luxury-brand specialist can add an income band near the coast, while a general repair shop mails every household.
Ownership splits along different lines. Several beach areas are mostly renters: 37% of households own in Ocean Beach (92107) and 31% in Imperial Beach (91932). The backcountry mostly owns: 88% in Valley Center (92082), 76% in Ramona (92065) and 75% in Alpine (91901).
Density decides how far a mailing has to reach. North Park has 6,272 households per square mile and Ocean Beach 4,532; Valley Center has 51 and Ramona 73. A one-mile circle around a shop in North Park takes in thousands of homes and the same circle in Valley Center a small fraction of that, so backcountry shops plan by whole ZIP code or route.
USPS route types follow the same split, with exceptions. Of the county's 1,924 carrier routes, 227 are rural routes, including all 17 in Valley Center and all 11 in Alpine, but also all 21 in Vista's 92081, which has 1,192 households per square mile. Rural is a USPS delivery type, not a measure of open land, and EDDM mails it like any route; inland, one route simply covers more ground, so check where each one runs before you add it.
Where EDDM reaches, and where it cannot
Near a city shop, a handful of routes holds thousands of homes: downtown's 36 routes (92101) carry 35,770 residential deliveries and Mira Mesa's 44 (92126) carry 27,710. Countywide, the USPS EDDM route service listed 1,924 routes with 1,235,764 residential and 85,555 business deliveries when retrieved on September 27, 2026.
Six ZIP codes with Census households have no carrier routes, so EDDM cannot reach them: 91931, 91948, 92060, 92067, 92134 and 92136. Rancho Santa Fe (92067), with 2,971 households, is the one a North County shop is likely to want; the other five hold 518 households between them. The route service lists no routes for Camp Pendleton's 92055 either, so mail to these places has to be addressed.
In backcountry towns the route covers part of the town. Borrego Springs (92004) has 1,649 households but 224 residential deliveries on its one carrier route, and Pine Valley (91962) has 1,056 households and 56. EDDM there reaches the homes on the route and no one else, so a shop serving the mountains or the desert should price an addressed list.
In one ZIP code, businesses outnumber homes: Sorrento Valley (92121) has 3,616 business deliveries to 1,834 residential, which suits a fleet or work-truck offer mailed as EDDM with businesses included. For a consumer offer anywhere else, set the EDDM Route Builder to residential only.
One sectional center for the whole county
USPS sorts every San Diego County ZIP code at one sectional center. ZIP codes starting 919, 920 and 921 all go to SCF SAN DIEGO CA 920 on the letter list (L005) and the flat list (L016), and the plant's own 92084 is one of them, so a shop mailing inside the county has one SCF to plan for.
With one SCF, the timing choices left to a shop are the mail class and the entry point: origin, the SCF, or for EDDM the delivery units named in the route table below. Plan the in-home week in the Mail Date Planner; order cutoffs are on Turnaround Times.
The picture changes at the county line. ZIP codes starting 925, which include Temecula and Murrieta, sort letters at SCF MORENO VALLEY CA 925 and flats at SCF SN BERNARDINO CA 923, so a reminder file that reaches into Riverside County goes to more than one SCF; Plavidian presorts for each.
Close to the plant in Vista
Plavidian's production plant is at 2210 E Vista Way in Vista. A shop can review its proof there before approving it, a good moment to check that the shop name and address match its Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) registration and that every price says what it includes; the rules are in the Auto Repair direct mail guide.
Door hangers and yard signs for a grand opening are print-only. Any shop can collect them free at will-call in Vista or have them shipped, and North County shops can have them delivered locally. Being close helps with proofs and pickups, not with USPS delivery: a shop in Chula Vista and one in Oceanside plan their in-home weeks the same way.
