Direct mail in Carlsbad, planned ZIP code by ZIP code

Direct mail in Carlsbad is planned across four ZIP codes, 92008, 92009, 92010 and 92011, which hold 43,981 households and 72 USPS carrier routes, all under the San Diego sectional center. Treat them separately: 92009 leads the four in both owner occupancy and households with children, while about half of 92008's households rent and more than half of the business deliveries on Carlsbad's routes are there. Plavidian's plant in Vista, where mailings are addressed and prepared for USPS, is 9 miles away by road.

Carlsbad at a glance

  • 43,981 households in 4 ZIP codes
  • 115,867 residents (California DOF, January 2026)
  • 72 USPS carrier routes, and EDDM reaches all four ZIPs
  • 47% of households earn $150,000 or more (county: 32%)
  • 9 miles by road from the Vista plant

Households by ZIP code

Where Carlsbad households are

92009 is the largest of the four ZIPs at 16,223 households and 92010 the smallest at 6,795. Density runs from 824 households per square mile in 92010 to 1,399 in 92011, so a radius of the same size takes in about 70% more households in 92011 than in 92010, on average.

Carrier routes

72 carrier routes across four ZIP codes

All four Carlsbad ZIPs have carrier routes, so an EDDM drop can take in all of them or a single route, while six ZIP codes elsewhere in San Diego County have none in the USPS route data. 92009 has the most routes, 27, including all 5 rural routes in the four ZIPs and the only highway contract route; 92008, 92010 and 92011 are city routes only.

Owners and renters

92008 and 92009 call for different lists

The four-ZIP totals, 63% owners and 31% of households with children, describe neither of the two biggest ZIPs. In 92008, about half of households own their home, 22% have children and 30% have a householder 65 or older. In 92009, the largest ZIP, 73% own and 37% have children, the highest shares of the four.

That gap settles how to mail any offer only an owner can accept: a remodel, a new roof, a landscaping contract, a listing appointment. Saturating 92008 routes puts roughly half of the pieces in rented homes, so for 92008 count the owner households in the Mailing List Builder and mail an addressed owner list, while an EDDM drop on the residential routes of 92009 already lands mostly with owners.

92010 and 92011 fall in between, at 63% and 64% owners, with children in 32% and 31% of households.

Business deliveries

Over half of the business stops are in 92008

USPS counts 3,985 business deliveries on Carlsbad's routes, and 2,101 of them are on the 21 routes in 92008. 92009 has the most residential deliveries of the four ZIPs, 16,732, but just 496 business ones.

The EDDM Route Builder counts either residential and business deliveries together or residential only. Switching businesses on adds about 17% to the count in 92008 but about 3% in 92009, with 92010 and 92011 in between, so make the call on purpose: a lunch spot or a gym may want the offices and storefronts, while a home service usually does not.

EDDM has no business-only option. To reach Carlsbad businesses without the homes around them, mail an addressed business list, which Plavidian can supply through licensed data providers; see mailing lists.

Income and age

High incomes, but not across the board

Across the four ZIPs, 47% of households report income of $150,000 or more, against 32% across San Diego County, and 29% have a householder 65 or older, against 24% countywide. Median household income runs from $105,371 in 92008 to $162,128 in 92009, and the median home value tops $1 million in all four ZIPs.

Those shares hide a lower tier: 18% of households report less than $50,000, and EDDM cannot skip them or choose households by age. A financial planning, senior living or high-end remodeling offer that depends on income or age belongs on an addressed list with those selects. In the Mailing List Builder, one filter on these ZIPs, such as income of $150,000 or more, returns a published Census figure; add a second, such as a householder 65 or older, and the count becomes an estimate, while the list itself is built once you order.

Delivery units

Two delivery units, each serving a pair of ZIPs

The route data shows two USPS delivery units for these ZIPs: one delivers 92008 and 92010, the other 92009 and 92011, and the last column of the route table names them. The pairs differ: median household income is $162,128 and $154,985 in 92009 and 92011, against $105,371 and $120,612 in 92008 and 92010.

Both units sit under the same sectional center, so for USPS the pairing matters when you pick an entry point. In the EDDM Route Builder, postage appears for origin, SCF and DDU entry next to each other; at DDU entry an EDDM mailing to all four ZIPs is drop-shipped to both units, while one kept to a single pair goes to one unit.

Keeping an EDDM drop to 92009 and 92011 is also one way to lean saturation mail toward higher incomes here. It still reaches every home on those routes: you are choosing the area, not the household.

From the Vista plant

Nine miles from the plant

Carlsbad sits 9 road miles from the Plavidian plant at 2210 E Vista Way in Vista: a little farther than Oceanside (7 miles) or San Marcos (8), nearer than Escondido (13) or Encinitas (14). Those are free-flow routing distances for comparison, not a delivery time.

The drive counts for printed pieces that never enter the mail. Door hangers, which are hung by hand rather than mailed, and yard signs can be collected free from will-call in Vista, delivered locally around North County, or shipped, and a proof can be reviewed in person. Mail skips that trip: Plavidian enters it with USPS directly.

Local direct mail planning

Planning a Carlsbad mailing

From an idea to mail in homes, one step at a time. Each step opens the tool that does it.

  1. Define the market

Choose the audience before the area. Owners in 92008 call for a list; owners and families in 92009 can be reached route by route.

    Count Owner Households in 92008
  2. Compare approaches

Price 92008 both ways: EDDM to all 12,711 residential deliveries on its 21 routes, or an addressed list of the roughly half of its 11,814 households that own their home, a selection EDDM cannot make.

Compare EDDM and a Mailing List
  3. Estimate the mailing

The residential routes of 92009 held 16,732 deliveries when the route data was retrieved; price an 8.5x11 EDDM flat at that quantity to see printing, mailing services and postage. Printing can be paid by card, postage by check or wire only, and no mail goes to USPS until the postage has cleared.

    Estimate a 92009 EDDM Mailing
  4. Prepare the creative

One 8.5x11 layout can serve both halves of this plan, the EDDM drop in 92009 and the owner list in 92008, because only the address and permit area differ. Plavidian Studio™ draws the bleed and safe zone for you, and with a free Plavidian account it places that address and permit area too; for a PDF made elsewhere, Print File Check gives an A to F grade.

    Design the 8.5x11 Flat
  5. Produce and mail

The order cutoff is 12:00 PM Pacific, or 9:00 AM Pacific when you choose a 2-day rush on a product that offers one, and production time begins at proof approval; turnaround times lists the current windows. The mail goes out on Plavidian's permits, so you need none of your own.

  6. Follow the mail

Plavidian Insight™, included with every Plavidian mailing at no separate charge, follows the mail through USPS scans with delivery counts, a day-by-day curve and a map. EDDM flats carry no barcode, so Insight cannot follow a 92009 EDDM drop the way it follows addressed mail; the Plavidian Assurance™ Report is the proof that drop was delivered to USPS. Scans show mailstream visibility, not proof of delivery.

USPS entry

One sectional center for letters and flats

All four ZIPs start with 920, and USPS labels letters and flats addressed to them alike, to SCF SAN DIEGO CA 920, with San Diego as their ADC too, so switching an addressed Carlsbad mailing from a postcard to an 8.5x11 flat does not change its sectional center. That SCF also serves Vista and the rest of San Diego County, so a Carlsbad mailing never needs a drop shipment to a second sectional center.

Questions

Questions about direct mail in Carlsbad

How many households does a Carlsbad mailing reach?

Census survey estimates put 43,981 households in 92008, 92009, 92010 and 92011, from 6,795 in 92010 to 16,223 in 92009. The USPS routes in those ZIPs list 47,055 residential deliveries, and an EDDM quantity follows that USPS count, not the Census one.

The California Department of Finance put Carlsbad's population at 115,867 as of January 1, 2026, but mail is counted in households and delivery points, not people. The ZIP boundaries and the city boundary are not identical, so use the Mailing List Builder to count a radius, part of the city or owners only.

Count Carlsbad Households

Can Every Door Direct Mail cover all of Carlsbad?

Yes. All four ZIP codes have EDDM carrier routes, 72 in all, and each has more residential deliveries than the 5,000 pieces per ZIP per day that EDDM Retail allows, even 92010 with 7,411. Because Plavidian mails EDDM on its own permit through the business mail entry unit, that daily cap does not limit a Carlsbad drop.

Plavidian EDDM orders start at 200 pieces, and Plavidian runs EDDM with flat-size pieces: 6.5x9, 8.5x11 or 9x12. EDDM delivers to every residential address on the selected routes, and to business addresses when you switch them on, but it cannot select owners, incomes or ages.

Open Carlsbad's Carrier Routes

Which Carlsbad ZIP code suits EDDM for homeowners or families?

92009. Its households are 73% owner-occupied and 37% have children, the highest shares of the four ZIPs, and its routes carry 16,732 residential deliveries against only 496 business ones. In 92008, where about half of households rent and 22% have children, send an owner or family offer to an addressed list instead.

Where is Carlsbad mail sorted?

At the San Diego sectional center: USPS labels letters and flats for all four Carlsbad ZIP codes, which begin with 920, to SCF SAN DIEGO CA 920, the same center that serves Vista. From there one delivery unit serves 92008 and 92010 and another serves 92009 and 92011, and mail entered directly at a delivery unit skips the sectional center.

USPS describes the Margaret L. Sellers Processing and Distribution Center in San Diego as its largest mail processing facility in San Diego County, in a December 2024 newsroom release.

Plan an EDDM Mail Date

Can a Carlsbad business pick up printing in Vista?

Yes. The plant at 2210 E Vista Way is about 9 miles from Carlsbad by road, and print-only orders such as door hangers and yard signs can be picked up free at will-call, delivered locally around North County, or shipped. Proofs can be reviewed there in person.

Mailed pieces never need collecting, because Plavidian enters them with USPS itself.

How can a mailing reach Carlsbad businesses?

Start in 92008, which holds 2,101 of the 3,985 business deliveries on Carlsbad's routes. EDDM with business deliveries switched on reaches them along with every home on those routes; to reach businesses alone, mail an addressed business list, which Plavidian can supply through licensed data providers.
