Direct mail market guide: San Diego County
Direct mail planning for the four ZIP codes that cover Escondido
Direct mail in Escondido works best planned ZIP by ZIP. The four ZIP codes that cover the city hold very different households: most 92025 households rent, 92027 has the largest share of households with children, and 92029 has the highest owner share and median income. Plavidian plans, addresses and mails Escondido campaigns from its production plant in Vista, 13 miles away by road; this guide lays out the households, carrier routes and USPS sorting behind each choice.
Escondido at a glance
- 60,507 households in 4 ZIP codes
- City population 152,196 (California DOF, January 1, 2026)
- 87 USPS carrier routes, 16 of them rural
- One USPS label for letters and flats: SCF SAN DIEGO CA 920
- Plavidian's Vista plant is 13 miles away by road
Households by ZIP code
Where Escondido households are
Each of the four ZIP codes suits a different mailing. 92025 is the densest and the only one where renters outnumber owners, 92027 has the highest share of households with children, 92026 holds the most households, and 92029, the smallest, leads the four on owner share, share of householders 65 or older, median income and median home value.
| ZIP | Households | Owner-occupied | With children | Householder 65+ | Median household income | Median home value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 92025 | 16,612 | 42% | 35% | 20% | $71,716 | $767,400 |
| 92026 | 19,153 | 63% | 29% | 28% | $97,301 | $664,300 |
| 92027 | 17,038 | 61% | 38% | 23% | $86,106 | $665,900 |
| 92029 | 7,704 | 73% | 27% | 32% | $120,038 | $911,600 |
| Total | 60,507 | |||||
The four ZIP Code Tabulation Areas cover 140.7 square miles of land, and all four reach past the city limit, so these figures describe the ZIP codes rather than the City of Escondido alone. For a count inside the city boundary, search Escondido in the Mailing List Builder.

Carrier routes
USPS carrier routes in Escondido ZIP codes
An EDDM drop to every route in all four ZIP codes is 61,106 pieces for the residential deliveries, or 65,266 with business deliveries included. 92025, 92026 and 92027 carry 23 to 25 routes each and 92029 carries 14; 16 of the 87 routes are rural, 8 of them in 92026.
| ZIP | Carrier routes | Residential deliveries | Business deliveries | Delivered from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 92025 | 25 (1 rural) | 16,791 | 2,173 | Escondido |
| 92026 | 25 (8 rural) | 18,915 | 322 | Escondido |
| 92027 | 23 (3 rural) | 17,386 | 384 | Orange Glen |
| 92029 | 14 (4 rural) | 8,014 | 1,281 | Escondido |

Owners and renters
92025 is the Escondido ZIP where renters outnumber owners
Only 42% of 92025 households own their home, against 61% to 73% in 92026, 92027 and 92029. 92025 is also the densest of the four ZIP codes, at 743 households per square mile, and has the lowest median household income of the four, $71,716.
For an offer only an owner can accept, such as a new roof, a remodel or a landscape project, saturation mail across 92025 lands mostly in renters' mailboxes. Count the owners there in the Mailing List Builder and mail them an addressed list, and keep EDDM for the three ZIP codes where owners are the majority.
Do not drop 92025 from an owner campaign altogether: its median home value, $767,400, is the second highest of the four. And for an offer any household can use, such as a restaurant or a walk-in clinic, that density helps: 92025 fits more than two and a half times as many households into a square mile as 92027 (743 against 286), so the same number of pieces covers a tighter area around a storefront.
Families, older households, income
Families cluster in 92027 and 92025, older and higher-income households in 92029
38% of 92027 households have children, the highest share of the four ZIP codes, and 92025 follows at 35%. 92029 runs the other way: it has the highest share of householders 65 or older (32%), the highest median household income ($120,038) and the highest median home value ($911,600), with 92026 second for older households at 28%.
Income is spread to both ends. Across the four ZIP codes, 28% of households earn $150,000 or more and another 28% earn under $50,000, so a single offer sent to all four is pitched at only part of the audience. Split the piece into versions by ZIP instead: a family or back-to-school message for 92027 and 92025, and a premium, retirement or Medicare-season message for 92029 and 92026.
EDDM cannot pick households by age or income, only routes, so for EDDM the choice of ZIP codes and routes is the targeting. An addressed list counted in the Mailing List Builder can go further, for example to households with children across 92027 and 92025, or to householders 65 or older in 92029 and 92026.
EDDM by ZIP
Whole-ZIP EDDM drops, and where the business deliveries are
All four Escondido ZIP codes have more than 5,000 residential deliveries; the smallest, 92029, has 8,014. EDDM Retail allows at most 5,000 pieces a day in any one ZIP Code, so a Retail drop at the post office covering all of 92026 (18,915 residential deliveries) would take at least four days. Plavidian mails EDDM on its own permit through the BMEU, where the Retail cap does not apply, so a full Escondido ZIP can go as one mailing, with a 200-piece job minimum and flat-size pieces.
Business deliveries are concentrated. In the September 2026 USPS route data, 92025 has 2,173 of the 4,160 in the four ZIP codes and 92029 another 1,281, while 92026 and 92027 have only 322 and 384. Leaving businesses out in the EDDM Route Builder takes about 2% off a full 92026 or 92027 drop, but 11% off 92025 and 14% off 92029.
Size an EDDM print run from the route counts, not the Census household table. The routes carry 61,106 residential deliveries against 60,507 Census households, and the gap runs both ways by ZIP: 8,014 deliveries against 7,704 households in 92029, but 18,915 against 19,153 in 92026.
USPS sorting and entry
Two delivery units under one sectional center
At the top level, USPS treats Escondido as part of a county-wide sectional center: its L005 (letters) and L016 (flats) labeling lists assign every San Diego County ZIP prefix, 919 through 921, to SCF SAN DIEGO CA 920. A USPS newsroom release describes the Margaret L. Sellers Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) in San Diego as the Postal Service's largest mail processing facility in San Diego County.
One level down, the route data splits the four ZIP codes in two. The 23 routes of 92027 are delivered from one delivery unit, and the 64 routes of 92025, 92026 and 92029 from another, as the route table shows. That matters when an EDDM mailing is priced for delivery unit (DDU) entry, because each route's bundles are entered at the unit that delivers it; the EDDM Route Builder shows the postage at origin, SCF and DDU entry next to each other.
Every Plavidian mailing includes Plavidian Insight™, with no separate charge. It follows addressed pieces through USPS scans by their Intelligent Mail barcodes. EDDM pieces carry no barcode, so Insight cannot track an EDDM drop in the same detail; the Plavidian Assurance™ Report is the proof that drop was delivered to USPS. Scans show movement through the mailstream, not proof of delivery.
From the Vista plant
13 miles from the plant: proofs, pickup and mail entry
Escondido is 13 miles by road from Plavidian's production plant in Vista: farther than Oceanside, San Marcos or Carlsbad, and closer than Fallbrook or Poway. That is close enough to review a proof in person, and work that is printed but not mailed, like door hangers or yard signs, can be collected at the plant, delivered locally around North County, or shipped.
For mail, the 13 miles do not matter: Plavidian prepares the pieces for USPS (addressing them when the mailing goes to a list) and enters them on its own permits, so an Escondido business has no permit to set up and no trip to the post office. Door hangers are the exception: they are not mailed, so decide early who will carry them door to door, and whether to collect them in Vista or have them delivered in Escondido.
Local direct mail planning
Planning a mailing in Escondido?
Six steps from choosing ZIP codes to following the mail. The market and estimate steps open tools already set to Escondido ZIP codes and route counts.
Define the market
Choose ZIP codes before the piece. An owner offer starts with 92026, 92027 and 92029, where owners are the majority, and reaches 92025 only through an owner-filtered list; a family offer starts with 92027 and 92025.
Count Owners in 92026, 92027 and 92029Compare approaches
In Escondido the choice splits by ZIP code. EDDM routes can carry an owner offer in 92026, 92027 and 92029, where 61% to 73% of households own, but 92025, at 42%, needs an addressed owner list, and one campaign can use both.
Compare EDDM and a Mailing ListEstimate the mailing
A residential EDDM drop to every route in 92029 is 8,014 pieces in the September 2026 route data, or 9,295 with its 1,281 business deliveries; an owner list's size comes from the List Builder count.
Price an EDDM Drop to 92029Prepare the creative
Plavidian runs EDDM with flat-size pieces, so the piece is 6.5x9, 8.5x11 or 9x12. For versions by ZIP code, such as a family offer for 92027 and a retirement offer for 92029, keep one layout and swap the offer panel. Plavidian Studio™, free to try with no account, marks the bleed, the safe zone and the USPS address area on the canvas.
Design an 8.5x11 EDDM FlatProduce and mail
An Escondido mailing is addressed and prepared for USPS at the Vista plant, 13 miles away, and mailed on Plavidian's own permits. Printing can be paid by card, while USPS postage goes by check or wire and must clear in full before any mail is released.
Follow the mail
Plavidian Insight follows addressed mail through USPS scans at no separate charge. An EDDM drop carries no barcodes, so Insight cannot track it the same way; the Plavidian Assurance™ Report is the proof it was delivered to USPS. For letter-size pieces, such as a personalized letter sent as Print + Insert, Plavidian Sentry™ camera verification is an optional add-on that checks each piece against its record before it leaves the plant.

USPS entry
How Escondido mail is labeled and entered
Every Escondido ZIP code starts with 920, so one row covers the city, and its letter and flat columns match: whether the piece is a 6x11 postcard or an 8.5x11 flat, USPS sorts it to SCF SAN DIEGO CA 920, the same sectional center as mail addressed to Vista.
| ZIP codes starting | Letters sort to | Flats sort to | ADC |

Questions
Questions about direct mail in Escondido
How many households are in Escondido's ZIP codes?
The four ZIP codes that cover Escondido, 92025, 92026, 92027 and 92029, hold 60,507 households in the Census Bureau's 2019 to 2023 American Community Survey, and 58% of them are owner-occupied. 92026 is the largest with 19,153 households and 92029 the smallest with 7,704.
All four ZIP codes reach past the city limit, so this counts the ZIP codes, not the city alone. The Mailing List Builder counts by city boundary, ZIP or radius from 2020 Census blocks and American Community Survey figures stored in Plavidian's system, and can narrow a count to owners, renters, households with children, age or income.
How many carrier routes does Escondido have for EDDM?
The four ZIP codes that cover Escondido have 87 carrier routes, with 61,106 residential and 4,160 business deliveries in the USPS route data retrieved September 27, 2026. All four have both city and rural routes, and 92026 has the most rural ones, 8 of its 25.
USPS adjusts routes over time, and the EDDM Route Builder, refreshed from the USPS route service at least every two weeks, shows the current counts before you order.
Can one EDDM mailing cover all of an Escondido ZIP code?
Yes. Each of the four Escondido ZIP codes has more than 5,000 residential deliveries, past what EDDM Retail accepts in one ZIP Code in a day, but Plavidian mails EDDM on its own permit through the BMEU, where the Retail daily cap does not apply.
Plavidian EDDM jobs have a 200-piece minimum and use flat-size pieces: 9x12, 8.5x11 or 6.5x9. All of 92026 is 18,915 pieces for its residential deliveries, or 19,237 with its 322 business deliveries, and EDDM cannot pick out owners, ages or incomes on those routes. See the EDDM guide.
Where is Escondido mail sorted?
At the USPS sectional center for San Diego County. Escondido's ZIP codes all start with 920, and the USPS labeling lists assign both letters and flats for 920 ZIP codes to SCF SAN DIEGO CA 920, the same label Vista's ZIP codes carry, so there is no letter and flat split to plan.
USPS describes the Margaret L. Sellers P&DC in San Diego as its largest mail processing facility in the county. Below the sectional center, 92027 is delivered from a different delivery unit than 92025, 92026 and 92029, which matters for mail entered at the delivery unit, such as EDDM priced at DDU entry.
Is EDDM or a mailing list better for Escondido?
It depends on the ZIP code and the offer. An owner offer needs an addressed owner list in 92025, where only 42% of households own, while EDDM routes in 92029, where 73% own, reach mostly owner households; an offer any household can use works with EDDM across all four ZIP codes.
One Escondido campaign can use both: EDDM routes where owners are the majority, and an addressed list in 92025, where they are not. Plavidian CASS-processes addressed lists, removes duplicates and runs NCOALink move update when the mailing needs it.
Can an Escondido business pick up printing in Vista?
Yes. Door hangers, yard signs and other print you put out yourself can be picked up at Plavidian's plant in Vista, 13 miles from Escondido by road, shipped, or delivered locally around North County. Mailings are entered with USPS by Plavidian, so they never need to be collected.
A 2-day rush, offered on certain products, has a 9:00 AM Pacific order cutoff; every other turnaround has a 12:00 PM Pacific cutoff, and production time counts from proof approval. The turnaround times page lists the current production windows.
