USPS Delivery Times by Mail Class

Updated 2026-07-12

USPS delivery times by class: First-Class Mail takes 1 to 5 business days and Marketing Mail roughly 3 to 10. How to plan a drop date around them.

How long does First-Class Mail take?

First-Class Mail takes 1 to 5 business days and is not guaranteed. Local and regional mail (nearer zones) is typically 1 to 3 days. Effective April 1, 2026, long-distance routes (farther zones) moved to 4 to 5 business days after USPS shifted those routes from air to ground transportation. First-Class includes forwarding and return of undeliverable pieces.

How long does USPS Marketing Mail take?

USPS Marketing Mail takes roughly 3 to 10 business days, because bulk mail is processed around faster classes. Build slack into the campaign schedule, and do not use Marketing Mail for date-critical offers. Marketing Mail is not forwarded or returned unless an endorsement is added (see What do ancillary service endorsements do).

Priority Mail and Express

Priority Mail is 1 to 3 business days. Priority Mail Express is 1 to 2 days (overnight to most) with a money-back guarantee. Ground Advantage is 2 to 5 business days. See Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and What is USPS Ground Advantage.

Media Mail

Media Mail takes 2 to 8 business days. It is the slowest and cheapest option for eligible media.

How do I plan a mailing drop date?

Work backward from the target in-home date: add production and list-processing time (Plavidian's turnaround) plus the class's service standard plus a safety buffer, and account for holidays and weekends. Standards are averages, not promises, and peak season (late November through early January) runs longer. For a committed date, use Priority Mail Express or ask a rep; do not promise an exact in-home date on standard classes.

In-home windows

For direct mail campaigns, an in-home window (a range of days when most pieces land) is more realistic than a single date. Drop-shipping deeper into the network (see What is drop shipment) tightens the window. Plavidian sets the target window per job.
