Overview

About flat flyers & brochures

A flyer is the utility print of every campaign and every business: one full page, printed sharp, put to work everywhere. It is the sheet stacked on the counter, pinned to the community board, handed across the table at an event, slid into an envelope behind a letter, or folded down into a brochure that mails itself. Nothing about it is precious, which is exactly why it earns its keep — you print it fast, distribute it wide, and update it the moment the message changes.

Reach for a flyer when the message needs more room than a postcard but does not warrant a booklet, and when the same content has to live in more than one place. A canvassing team wants a flat handout; the follow-up mailing wants that identical art folded into an envelope; the counter wants a stack. Because a flyer so often becomes a mailpiece later, we print it with that future in mind from the first proof, so a handout today can become an insert or a self-mailer next week without a redesign.

Production is where the format earns its flexibility. The 8.5x11 sheet is the workhorse; an 11x17 half-folds to a booklet-style piece with four panels of room. Stock sets the signal before a word is read: 80lb and 100lb gloss text carry marketing shine and saturated color, while 70lb uncoated reads editorial and takes a pen. Heavier and coated stocks are scored before folding so the fold seats clean instead of cracking through the ink, and every fold, score, and trim is planned against the panel layout rather than improvised on the finishing floor.

The postal reality is the part buyers underestimate: a flat, unfolded flyer alone does not meet letter-automation rules, so it cannot simply go in the mail. Folded correctly it can. Tri-folded to 8.5 x 3.67 inches it fits a #10 envelope exactly, or folded and tabbed as a self-mailer it mails at letter automation rates. In every folded case the address panel cannot cross a fold and the open edge needs tabs, and we engineer the piece to those constraints so it prices at the rate you were quoted and clears automation without a surcharge.

Plavidian runs a flyer job the same way it runs its largest mailings, end to end. When the flyer becomes mail, the list is standardized and matched to carrier routes, postage is optimized against your actual data, and the piece moves through print, then finishing — fold, score, tab or insert — then verification. As an envelope insert it is read and matched to its letter by camera on the inserting line, so the right page reaches the right household, and the run reconciles back to your list before it enters the USPS mailstream. Artwork is supported with preflight, mailpiece templates, and layout guidance, and we produce from your print-ready files.

Mailing It

How flat flyers & brochures mail

A flat 8.5x11 flyer does not mail on its own — an unfolded sheet does not meet USPS letter-automation standards — but it converts three ways, and each has its own rules. Tri-folded, an 8.5x11 lands at exactly 8.5 x 3.67 inches and drops cleanly into a #10 letter package. Folded and tabbed as a self-mailer, it mails at letter automation rates, provided the final fold sits to the bottom, tabs close the open edges in prescribed positions, and the address block never crosses a fold. Inserted alongside a letter, it rides in an envelope and is matched to that letter by camera on the inserting line. Tell us the destination up front and we build the file toward the rate that fits — because the fold, the panel plan, and the address placement all have to be decided before the art is finished, not after.

Common Uses

Where flat flyers & brochures earn their keep

Canvassing & events

Literature for the field team, the counter stack, and the community board — printed fast and reprinted the moment the message shifts.

Envelope inserts

The second voice inside a letter package, matched to the letter by camera on the inserting line so the right page reaches the right household.

Tri-fold brochures

Three panels of sequential story that fold to 8.5 x 3.67 in and drop straight into a #10 envelope, or tab up as a self-mailer.

Menus & price lists

Content that changes often, printed sharp and distributed everywhere — the flat sheet for the counter, the folded version for the mail drop.

Program & service guides

Half-folded 11x17 for events, offerings, and schedules when a single sheet needs to carry four panels of information.

Good To Know

Before you order

  • 8.5x11 is the workhorse size; 11x17 half-folds to a booklet-style piece with four panels
  • Tri-folded, an 8.5x11 lands at 8.5 x 3.67 in and fits a #10 envelope exactly
  • The address block cannot cross a fold, so plan the panels before you design
  • 80lb and 100lb gloss text read as marketing; 70lb uncoated and matte read as editorial and take a pen
  • Heavier and coated stocks are scored before folding so the fold does not crack through the ink
  • A flat, unfolded flyer alone does not meet letter-automation rules; folded-and-tabbed or enveloped, it mails
  • Folded self-mailers need tabs in prescribed positions and the final fold to the bottom to run at automation rates
  • The same file can run as a flat handout and a folded insert in one order — and inserts are camera-matched to the letter

Questions

Flat Flyers & Brochures FAQs

Can I mail a flyer by itself?

Not flat. An unfolded 8.5x11 sheet does not meet USPS letter-automation rules, so it cannot mail on its own. Folded and tabbed as a self-mailer it can, and folded into an envelope it can. Tell us the destination and we prepare it for the rate that fits.

Does a tri-fold need tabs to mail?

If it mails as a self-mailer, yes. USPS automation runs pieces at high speed and an untabbed open edge jams or tears, so the DMM prescribes tab count, size, and position. If instead it goes inside an envelope as an insert, no tabs are needed — the envelope does that work.

What stock should a handout use?

80lb or 100lb gloss text for marketing feel and saturated color, or 70lb uncoated when you want it to read like information rather than advertising and be easy to write on. We will send samples with a quote if you are deciding.

What is the difference between a flyer and a brochure?

The fold. A flyer is a flat single sheet; a brochure is that sheet folded into panels — a tri-fold from 8.5x11, or a half-fold from 11x17. The same file can be both, which is why we plan the fold before the art is finished.

Can the same artwork be both a handout and a mailer?

Yes, and that is the point of the format. One file can run as a flat handout for the field and as a folded insert or self-mailer in the same order, as long as the fold and the address placement are planned up front. Reorders start from your saved artwork.

Do you design flyers?

We support artwork with preflight, mailpiece templates, and layout guidance, and produce from your print-ready files. Preflight checks size, bleed, resolution, and — when the piece mails — fold and address placement before anything runs.
