Overview
About door hangers
Door hangers are proof of presence. Unlike a mailpiece that arrives anonymously in a stack, a hanger on the knob is physical evidence that a canvasser, a crew, or a volunteer stood at that specific door. That is why field programs reach for them in the moments when the doorstep beats the mailbox: the final days of a campaign, the block a service truck just worked, the neighborhood a new location wants to own. The message is short, the format is unmistakable, and there is nothing to open.
Three die-cut sizes cover almost every field use. The 3.5 x 8.5 inch hanger is the compact, economical drop when the walk is long and the message is a single ask. The 4.25 x 11 inch hanger is the workhorse: enough face for a headline, a photo, an offer, and a call to action on each side. The 4.25 x 14 inch hanger is the tall version for a map, a menu, or a schedule. All three share the same hook die, so the choice is about how much you need to say and how many doors you need to cover per dollar, not about a change in production.
The die geometry is fixed and precise, and it drives the design. A full circular hang-hole 1.1875 inches in diameter sits centered across the width with its center one inch below the trim top, and a single angled hairline slit runs from the top edge down to the hole so the hanger slips onto a knob and stays. That means the top band of the piece is committed to hardware, not headlines: keep type and faces clear of the hole and slit, and let the artwork bleed everywhere else. Both sides print full-bleed, so the back is a second billboard, not an afterthought.
Stock is what separates a hanger that survives the route from one that curls in the first sprinkler. We run 14pt and 100lb gloss cover with an aqueous (AQ) coat, which handles morning irrigation, a slammed screen door, and a day of sun without tearing at the hook or going limp. Thinner text stocks fail exactly where the stress concentrates, at the slit, so cover weight is the standard here rather than an upgrade. The AQ coating also keeps color saturated outdoors, which matters when the piece is competing with a real front door for attention.
We produce hangers the way field programs deploy them. Multiple language and turf versions gang together on a single order and sort by version, so a bilingual precinct or a multi-neighborhood service push prints once and separates cleanly. Runs can be versioned per precinct and boxed in walk-list or route order when you ask for it, so the field team collects a box and goes rather than re-sorting on the tailgate. Artwork moves through the same preflight as our mail products, verifying size, bleed, and clearance around the die before anything cuts, and finished boxes are staged for will-call or shipment to hit the day the canvass launches.
Production & delivery
Getting your door hangers to you
Door Hangers are produced in Vista, California and finished ready to use — they are not USPS mailpieces. Choose will-call pickup, local delivery, or shipping when you place the order.
Common Uses
Where door hangers earn their keep
GOTV & canvassing
Walk lists and literature drops in the closing days, when a piece on the knob proves the door was worked and reaches voters the mailbox already saturated. Versioned per precinct and boxed in walk order for the field team.
Home services & trades
We-were-in-your-neighborhood marketing for lawn care, pest control, roofing, and delivery services. A crew leaves hangers on the surrounding doors while the truck is already on the block, turning one job into a street of leads.
Multilingual field programs
Separate language versions for the same turf, printed together on one order and sorted by version so canvassers carry the right piece for the right door without hand-sorting.
Local retail & grand openings
A new store, clinic, or restaurant blankets its trade area on foot with an offer that a passing mailer cannot match for presence. Both sides carry the offer and the map.
Service & appointment notices
Missed-you tags, scheduled-service reminders, and utility or inspection notices that need to be left at a specific address by hand rather than mailed.
Good To Know
Before you order
- 3.5 x 8.5, 4.25 x 11, and 4.25 x 14 inches are the three die-cut sizes; all use the same hook die
- The die is a full 1.1875 inch circular hang-hole centered on the width, its center 1 inch below the trim top, with a single angled slit to the top edge
- Keep headlines, faces, and critical type out of the top band around the hole and slit; let art bleed everywhere else
- 14pt or 100lb gloss cover with AQ coating is the standard; thinner text stocks tear at the hook
- Printed both sides, full-bleed edge to edge, so the back is a second surface not a throwaway
- Not a mailpiece: the hook does not meet USPS mailing standards, so hangers are distributed by hand
- Multi-language and multi-turf versions gang on one order and sort by version
- Runs can be boxed in walk-list or route order for grab-and-go will-call
Questions
Door Hangers FAQs
Can door hangers be mailed?
Not as-is. The die-cut hook and slit do not meet USPS mailpiece standards, so hangers are a hand-distributed field product. If you need the same message in the mail, we run the artwork as a postcard or self-mailer on the same order, sized and imposed for the postage rate that fits.
What stock stands up outdoors?
14pt or 100lb gloss cover with AQ coating. It handles morning sprinklers, a slammed door, and a day of sun without tearing at the hook. Thinner text stocks concentrate stress at the slit and fail there, so cover weight is our standard rather than an upgrade.
What are the sizes, and how big is the hole?
The die-cut sizes are 3.5 x 8.5, 4.25 x 11, and 4.25 x 14 inches. All use a full circular hang-hole 1.1875 inches in diameter, centered on the width with its center one inch below the top, plus a single angled slit from the top edge down to the hole.
What should I keep clear of the die-cut area?
Keep headlines, logos, faces, and critical type out of the top band around the hole and slit; anything there gets cut through or lost on the knob. Backgrounds and color should bleed fully to the trim, and both sides print edge to edge, so treat the top inch or so as hardware, not layout.
Can you run multiple language or turf versions together?
Yes. Different language and turf versions gang on a single order and separate by version, so a bilingual precinct or a multi-neighborhood push prints once and comes back sorted, ready for the field.
Can you sort and box by walk list?
Yes. Versioned runs can be boxed by turf or route so the field team grabs a box and goes without re-sorting on site. Tell us how the canvass is organized and we will match the boxing to it, staged for will-call or shipment on your launch date.
